Internal and External Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids occur when the swollen blood vessels are far in the rectum such that they cannot be seen. They are not painful and can be diagnosed if there is bleeding during bowel movement.

External hemorrhoids occur when swollen blood vessels protrude (prolapse) from the anus when having a bowel movement. They are visible as a pinkish mass. They are painful as the anus is nerve rich. Sometimes there is bleeding if the hemorrhoids, a condition called thrombosis.  External hemorrhoids can be pushed back in.

Internal Hemorrhoid Causes:

Although no specific cause can be pointed out, hemorrhoids are associated with straining during bowel movement.  Undue pressure emanating from the abdominal area is also associated with hemorrhoids.  This pressure could be from hard sneezing, vomiting, coughing, obesity and pregnancy.

Constipation and constant straining during bowel movement have been seen as the likeliest precursors to hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid Symptoms

The symptoms of internal hemorrhoids are blood in the stool and on the tissue after bowel movements. External hemorrhoids are easier to notice as the symptoms are more visible;

  • Irritation, pain and extreme irritation and itching around the anus.
  • Painful and itchy lump around the anus
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Blood on the tissue paper after bowel movements
  • Leaking of fecal matter

In extreme cases, one might become anemic and pale due to blood loss.

Diagnosis

To determine whether one has a case of hemorrhoid, the doctor will have to do a rectal exam. The doctor feels for any abnormalities in the rectum. If there are abnormalities, a sigmoidoscopy test is performed so that the doctor can see what is in the rectum.

Common Hemorrhoid Treatments Don’t Always Work

Hemorrhoids usually go away after some time when the condition causing them is taken care of. Treatment for pain can be done by sitting in warm water for at least 10 minutes per day. If the itching and irritation are too much, there are over-the-counter medications like ointments and creams to take care of it.

In extreme cases, the doctor can prescribe a rubber band ligation. This is placing a rubber band around the hemorrhoids to cut off blood circulation and make them shrink.  A chemical can also be injected into the hemorrhoids to make them shrink in a procedure known as injection therapy or sclerotherapy.

However, most common and over the counter internal hemorrhoid treatments work only temporarily, work occasionally, or don’t work at all and that is why a real tried and true treatment is needed.  One that offers relief so that you can get back to a normal life.

Prevention

Eating foods rich in dietary fiber is recommended to keep bowel movements easy. Foods rich in fiber include oatmeal, bran, carrots, whole wheat, and brown rice.
